Joel Mathews

Joel Mathews is an artisan, and a silversmith of over 20 years, presently living well in the mountains of Colorado. She shares, “I have always loved color, textures, precious gemstones and organic natural materials, which is what I work with. I have been a collector throughout my life of different eras of styles, the arts and crafts movement, native tribal, and modernism. I allow myself to be inspired by something that catches my eye, a shape, a stone, and then let it speak to me about how to create something of meaning and beauty with it. I am so excited to be able to pass along some of this knowledge, so that you can   perhaps enjoy this same medium or approach to art and the creative process. My inspiration continues to come from the natural world I live in, the pure beauty that surrounds me here, with the hope that my passion for creating will spark a flame in you and others. I enjoy teaching my artful crafts and place an emphasis on    ecology and the conscious love and respect of our Earthly home by being a Green   business. Most all of the stones I use are from old mines, many local or Colorado or the Southwest gems like natural turquoise.  I create one of a kind, fine sculptural jewelry, as well as production pieces, and many are designed from up-cycled and re-purposed lost and found items. My dedication to this is to help become more aware, to conserve our resources and hopefully help each other and the planet to stay more in balance.”

Beginning Jewelry and Metalsmithing

Get your creative juices going!

EarringsCome and learn the basics as well and walk away with a completed project or two.  Tuition of $125 includes everything you will need to take the class and you will leave with completed piece(s) of jewelry.  This class is designed for adults only.  There is a once-per-semester registration fee of $12.85

In this class you will learn some basic metal skills in designing, sawing,  hammering, patinas and finishing.  You will create and design both a pair of earrings and pendant or bracelet of your choice.  One piece will be sterling silver and the other in copper metals.  You can begin to build your skills in metalwork or practice more if you are already learning.  There will be no heat soldering in this beginning class, only cold soldering.

Intermediate and advanced classes will be added as we go along.  The beginner’s courses are a good place to start to build your foundation of knowledge and skills.  Work in silver and copper will be included and the instructor will have extras of many kinds that you can purchase from her during the class.

The first beginner’s level class will be held on Saturday, June 4th from 1-5 p.m. in Berg 401
Additional beginner’s classes are scheduled for July 2nd and August 6th – same time and location.  Each class is a stand-alone class — you do not have to attend all three classes.

Depending on student interest, intermediate and advanced classes will be scheduled this fall.
